How to Paint Adirondack Chairs

Adirondack chairs are one of the most popular types of chairs when it comes to garden furniture. Not only do they look good, but they are also comfortable, which makes them one of the best choices if you’re going to be buying some new pieces for your outdoor collection. But, just how do you go about painting one of these chairs? That’s what we’re going to be looking at in this article, so keep reading down below if you want to find out more.

Clean The Chair And Set Up The Area

The first thing that you’ve got to do before you can even think about looking at the paint is to clean the chair and set up the painting area. You want to use a damp rag and some kind of household cleaner to make sure that you are removing all of the dirt before you can start painting. Once you have done this, rinse the rag with warm water, and then go over the chair again just to pick up anything that might have been left behind. Then, you’ve got to leave it to try, or the paint isn’t going to take.

While the chair is drying, you can set down a piece of tarp or cloth on the ground. Transfer the chair upside down on this for it to dry. Now you’ve got somewhere that you can paint without making a mess of your garden. Check for any loose bolts and tighten them up if you notice any.

Sand The Surface

Sand the surface of the chair so that any remaining paint is removed. There’s nothing worse than one part of your chair being one color, and one being another simply because there were still little bits of paint left in certain areas. Another reason you want to sand the chair is so that it is smooth, making it easier to paint. So you want to sand away any kind of imperfection that you find, leaving you with a smooth chair that is now going to be a lot less hassle.

Once you’ve done this, you can turn the chair back upright and sand the top side as well. Repeat the process the same way you did with the bottom until the whole chair is smooth. As soon as this is done, wipe down the entire length of the chair to get rid of any lingering dust.

Prepare The Paint, And Paint!

The best thing that you can do is pick a paint that also has a primer combined with it. But, if you’re not using this and you are using primer and paint that are separate, cover the chair in primer first to achieve the best results. Primer is important, and if you don’t use it, then the quality of the job is not going to be as good.

Open the lid, and then stir the paint using a paint stick, or some kind of tool that will make sure everything is combined well. You can then pour some of the paint into your paint tray, dip your brush into the paint and start with the underside. Make sure that you get all of the little areas that are hard to reach, including any exposed areas between the slats of the chair. If you notice that any paint is dripping, for aesthetic purposes, use your brush to wipe them up.

From there, you want to keep painting the rest of the bottom of the chair until it is completely covered. Allow the paint to dry before turning the chair over, and repeating the process with the top side.

How Often Should You Paint Them?

When it comes to an Adirondack chair, you are probably going to need to paint them every three years or so. However, this is going to depend on a number of factors, such as whether or not you leave the chair out in the rain, or how durable the paint you have used was. The material that your Adirondack chair is made out of will also factor into how often you have to paint them.

It might be the case that you find the faded look aesthetically pleasing, and if this is true, then you don’t need to repaint the chair at all. It all depends on what look you want to go for and what kind of conditions your chair is being exposed to. Obviously, if it gets to a point where it looks like there is no longer any paint on the chair other than the occasional spot, you’re going to need to repaint it.

Extending Durability

It’s not a difficult process to paint one of these chairs. In fact, it is actually quite simple as long as you are using high-quality paint. If you want to extend durability, then the paintbrush and the paint that you use are going to be important factors. You might think that it is saving you money because you have chosen the cheaper option, but it will mean that you have to paint the Adirondack more often to keep it in good condition. As such, if you want to make it more durable, then you’ve got to get high-quality paint and tools in the first place.

As well as this, some people have found that a coat of polyurethane has been the solution to their problems. This will help to protect the chair from all kinds of weather, whether it be pouring with rain or extremely hot. It works by protecting the wood and keeping it safe from these elements.

So, you’re probably not going to have to paint the same chair more than once or twice if you’re lucky, which is why it’s necessary to put the effort in.
